35th Annual Spring Concert

Suzuki Strings Celebrates Spring with Public Concert
Miss Utah Guest Artist

The 35th annual Suzuki Strings Spring Concert will be on Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Center, 105 N. 100 East in Cedar City. Guest artist will be Miss Utah, JessiKate Riley, who started violin with the program at age 3 and played as a soloist with the Orchestra of Southern Utah a few years ago. The public is invited and the suggested donation is $5.

The Suzuki Strings Cedar City program teaches violin, viola, and cello to students from age 3 to adult and plays music ranging from fiddling to classical.  The orchestra has selected music from multiple eras, including Handel and the popular movie theme “Somewhere Out There.”  The advanced violinists are setting their talents to the challenging Mozart "Rondo" and Corelli's "La Folia." Cellists will play Bach and the theme from "Mission Impossible" while the violists are playing a popular "Allegro" by Suzuki and a Baroque
dance.  Fiddling is a popular part of the program with "Down Yonder" and a duet of "Boil the Cabbage Down."

Thirteen teachers cooperate to teach the students individually.  The weekly group classes help solidify skills and ensemble experience.

Group class teachers include Marin Colby, Amy Gold, Karaly Whitesel, Bethany Jeffs, Lindsay Szczesny, Sarah Chugg, and Sara Penny. Pianists are Sunny Chen, Mary Cozzens, Mel Jeffs, and Beth Stephenson.

"We enjoy sharing our music with the community and the program offers a wide range of music for your enjoyment", said Sara Penny, Suzuki Strings director.

Suzuki Strings Cedar City is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and appreciates support from the Cedar City RAP fund.

According to Christopher Schram, this was the first reward Miss Utah has won at Miss America in five years. Another fun fact to note is that the Miss Utah Organization is now tied with the Miss Massachusetts Organization for Non-finalist Talent awards, with 17 won by each!
