Thank you to the Suzuki Association of Utah (SAU) for co-sponsoring this workshop and for support from the RAP (Recreation, Arts, and Parks) Fund via Cedar City.
In addition there is a parent and teacher meeting with clinicians Brian Lewis, Paul Abegg, and Ka-Wai Yu on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6:15 p.m. at the upstairs conference room at Festival Hall/Heritage Center to explore developing students into independent musicians. This is free and the public is invited.
One of the most versatile and charismatic violinists today, Brian Lewis is an exceptionally dedicated and gifted performer whose passionate artistry has been heard and embraced around the world. "There are a lot of fine violinists on the concert stage today, but few can match Lewis for an honest virtuosity that supremely serves the music," reports the Topeka Capital-Journal. International performances include New York's Carnegie Hall, Australia, Canada, the French West Indies, Puerto Rico, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, France, England, Denmark, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. He has recorded numerous CDs, including world premieres.
As a dynamic and engaging teacher, Mr. Lewis is committed to growing the legacies of the great pedagogues Dorothy DeLay and Dr. Shin'ichi Suzuki for future generations. Mr. Lewis currently teaches at University of Texas at Austin, serves as Artistic Director of the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at Juilliard, and is Artistic Director and faculty member of the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program in Ottawa, KS. More information about Mr. Lewis can be found at www.brianlewisviolin.com
Cello clinician Dr. Ka-Wai Yu is an Assistant Professor of Music at Dixie State University, where he teaches cello and directs the string chamber music program. He previously taught at Eastern Illinois University and Indiana Wesleyan University. In great demand as a clinician, Dr. Yu has given master classes in numerous universities and institutions in North America and Asia. He has taught in music camps and workshops in Illinois, Georgia and Michigan, as well as in Hong Kong. He directs the newly established St. George Cello Ensemble and is a board member of the Cello Society of Southern Utah. He also serves as the Principal Cellist of Southwest Symphony Orchestra and has performed at major concert halls in Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. He is active as a chamber musician, and has been a member of the Kolob Trio, Ensemble Finesse, and the period-instrument ensemble La Réunion Musicale. He has appeared in many venues including the prestigious Aspen Music Festival. Dr. Yu obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Orchestra Director Dr. Paul Abegg is Professor of Music at Dixie State University with previous teaching at Brigham Young University and Olivet College (MI). He completed his advanced music studies at Michigan State, and Brigham Young Universities. He presents master classes as well as serves as an adjudicator and clinician at numerous competitions and festivals throughout the United States. His recording experience includes extensive film and television scores. He has collaborated with many professional artists and groups including Manheim Steam Roller, Donny Osmond, Peter Cetera, Natalie Cole, Marvin Hamlisch, Celtic Woman, Audra McDonald, Leon Fleisher, Marilyn Horne, Peter Serkin, Ellen Zwilich, Fredricka Von Stade, Mark O’Connor, Peter Schickele, Elmar Oliveira, Kathleen Battle, and Gil Shaham.
Violins, violas and cellists are featured in the concert with music ranging from Bach to Brahms plus fiddle tunes and the technically challenging “Hot Canary”. Twelve regional teachers are preparing the students to participate. Group class teachers are Marin Colby, Lindsay Szczesny, Amy Gold, Nathan Craven, Karaly Whitesel, Bethany Jeffs, and Sara Penny. Pianists are Rimi Fletcher, Tasha Seegmiller, Beth Stephenson, and Melanie Jeffs.
The Saturday concert culminates two days of workshop classes with students from throughout Utah. Suzuki Strings Cedar City is a non-profit organization and appreciates support from the RAP Fund (Recreation, Arts, and Parks) and the Suzuki Association of Utah. “We are thrilled that our students have the opportunity to work with world class musicians,” said Sara Penny, director. “We are fortunate to have a strong team of teachers and pianists helping. We appreciate all of them.” Suzuki Strings works with the SUU Music Department and the Suzuki Association of Utah to provide musical opportunities for students.
